That it goes beyond just the theory of what ONDC is and how it works is what makes the most useful read on the topic at this moment for me. And I'm sure many others will agree on that.
Given its present structure, ONDC might not succeed. Supporting it just for patriotic reasons doesn't make sense when we're aware of the financial aspects and p&l statements of food delivery or ecommerce companies as an example. Splitting systems up (acqusition, logistics, payments, sellers etc) doesn't appear to lead to any cost savings.
Thanks for the comment, Arjun. FWIW I don't think anyone will use ONDC just for 'patriotic reasons' - that's not how ONDC wins. Just like UPI, ONDC will succeed if it represents a better solution than the options that are currently available to businesses and consumers. Given the capabilities and the maturity of incumbent marketplace platforms, that won't be an easy task. But for Indian entrepreneurs, it's an interesting exam question to attempt to solve.
Woah! That took quite a while, but was worth it (as always!)
I was getting pretty apprehensive about the idea of digital mall as we went deeper into what it solved. There is a great piece by FinShots on superapps, which would be a good addition to this discussion.
The spot light on Beckn is on point. A great area to explore for tech believers that support decentralization. Something that is not CRYPTO!
As for you (or you guys), this piece was worth the wait. The excitement, the analogies and the flair all making me stick to a *long format* in the age in *under 60 seconds consumption*.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read (as always) Tarang. Appreciate the detailed feedback. Lots of good points (in particular about how Beckn is an implementation of crypto principles without crypto protocols). That's what continues to make India's DPI approach fascinating.
Great question - though the broad intent is similar (to widen the footprint of credit in India), there are differences in the types of products that are being targeted by each, as well as how they will be delivered. Here's a useful comparison charted out by Insurance Dekho's Rahul Mathur:
Thanks Rahul for an outstandingly comprehensive and insightful piece to understand ONDC!
Thanks Vikaas - appreciate you taking the time to read!
Thankyou Rahul for the comprehensive post!

This is the definition of beauty. What a write, this article will be vividly remembered in the future!! Thanks Rahul
Thanks so much Akshat - very kind of you to say!
This is superb Rahul / Aaryaman.
Well done.
Thank you sir!

Bruv! This is topclass stuff. Congrats.
Much appreciated...Phantom💀
Thanks for the push I needed to deep dive into the tech design.
Do we need OCEN or is it a subset of ONDC ?
